The province of Maha Sarakham is located in the North-eastern region of the poorest part of Thailand. As Bangkok becomes a global city, Maha Sarakham is capable to preserve its own indigenous culture and heritage. Local people speak regional languages, listen to folk music and dine in North-eastern cuisine. Most areas of Maha Sarakham are agricultural land where rice fields can be found all over the place.

The Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts at Mahasarakham University was founded in 2002. Every year, students enter the undergraduate program. Their goals are to become Realist painters or academic sculptors; some enter the program without knowing any national or international artists. In 2008, both Thai and Western contemporary art courses were introduced into the curriculum. Contemporary art and art criticism are being explained to students as well as new ideas and cultures. With the latest art trends, it is quite difficult to justify whether the new ideas will prepare students for their future careers or the contemporary culture will interfere the indigenous Isan culture.
